Untitled (2008) is a collection of faces. From my bedroom window overlooking the 125th Street elevated subway station in Manhattan, I videotaped my subjects as they waited alone on the platform late at night. Illuminated by harsh fluorescent lighting and isolated from their environment, the faces appear theatrical or ghost-like, bearing little resemblance to the banal reality of their setting. Whether pensive or paranoid, the expressions of the travelers seem timeless and almost archetypal. Using a contemporary process that combines digital video with traditional darkroom techniques has allowed me to create textural and ephemeral images that visually reference historical methods of image-making and portraiture.
This series was featured in Dear Dave #4 and subsequently Chosen for American Photography 25. In April 2009, it was exhibited at the Hyeres International Festival of Fashion and Photography, villa Noailles, Hyeres, France.
